The Compatibility of Human Rights Principles and Religious Values
5 October 2016, Hannover, Germany – In a dialogue between Religious Scholar and Professor on Islam for over 40 years, Dr. Peter Antes from the University of Hannover, and Jurist-Scholar, Human Rights Activist and Quran expert Dr. Seyed Azmayesh, the focus of the academic discussion was the compatibility of human rights principles and the core principles of Islam. This question is pertinent to our society today, where the perception of Islam as a religion, brings with it several misconceptions and misinformation. Social ignorance in this case has proven to be detrimental to cohesion and tolerance within a multi-cultural society like ours, with rising statistics on hate-crime and ‘Islamophobia’. Such debates, bringing together various academic backgrounds, are a precursor to larger discussions within society on such critical social issues, whilst establishing the congruence of human rights principles and religious teachings.
